Meaningful Learning with Technology emphasizes the importance of technology in schools. The big idea is that students should learn with technology not from technology. In other words, a computer should not replace a teacher and a lesson plan but instead it should be used as a tool to give richer meaning and depth to the subject matter. Technology in schools is not a new idea but technology as a tool instead of a teacher is a new concept. Technology in education has been used since the 17th-century with illustrated books. Our 21st-century community has advanced its technology therefore we have to change the way we apply it. I believe that technology is necessary in our classrooms today and this chapter has reinforced what I previously thought. At first I was surprised to read that research shows that computers are no more effective at teaching students than teachers. I am glad the chapter stated this because it shows that even with advanced technology teachers still need to do their job and not rely on technology to do it for them.
The ideas in this chapter have sparked my interest in technology in schools and how I may use it in the future. As a future educator or speech language pathologist I will use the skills and recommendations noted in this chapter. The most important would be using technology as a tool to teach creative thinking, problem solving, and innovation, etc. It is very important for students to have these skills because we live in a global economy.
